The short version
Google Play accepts a range of screenshot sizes, but if you want your app to be eligible for promotion placements (recommendation sections and featured surfaces), you need at least 4 screenshots at 1080 px or higher in 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait. The safe default for phone screenshots is 1080 × 1920 px portrait.
Screenshot requirements
| Device type | Count | Dimensions | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone | 2–8 (4+ recommended) | 320–3840 px per side | 9:16 portrait at 1080 × 1920 recommended |
| 7″ tablet | Up to 8 | 320–3840 px per side | 1080–7680 px for promotion eligibility |
| 10″ tablet | Up to 8 | 320–3840 px per side | 1080–7680 px for promotion eligibility |
| Chromebook | Up to 8 | 320–3840 px per side | 16:9 landscape recommended |
- Format: JPEG or 24-bit PNG — no alpha channel.
- The longest side can't be more than twice the shortest side. A 1080 × 2400 raw phone capture breaks this rule — reframe it to 9:16 before uploading.
- Promotion eligibility: at least 4 screenshots with a minimum of 1080 px, in 16:9 (1920 × 1080) or 9:16 (1080 × 1920).
Feature graphic and app icon
| Asset | Dimensions | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Feature graphic | 1024 × 500 px | JPEG or 24-bit PNG (no alpha) |
| App icon | 512 × 512 px | 32-bit PNG with alpha, max 1 MB |
| Android TV banner | 1280 × 720 px | JPEG or 24-bit PNG |
The feature graphic is required if you want a promo video, and it backs your listing header on many surfaces — treat it as a first-class asset, not an afterthought.
How Play differs from the App Store
- Play accepts a range of sizes; Apple requires exact dimensions per device. If you design at high resolution, you can reuse artwork across both stores.
- Play caps you at 8 screenshots per device type; Apple allows 10.
- Play forbids alpha channels in screenshots; export flattened PNGs.
- Both stores localize screenshots per language — captions in the shopper's language measurably improve conversion.

Design once, export for both stores
AppScreenshotLab frames your raw capture in a Pixel or Galaxy bezel, adds your caption and background, and exports a clean, flattened PNG — the same design workflow you use for your App Store set.
